Ethical aspects of accepting migrants and the role of social work in the context of curvent migrant crisis
ČAPKOVÁ, Jitka
The diploma thesis deals with ethical issues arising from the question of admission of migrants in the context of the current migration crisis. The aim of the thesis is to assess the ethical issues related to the admission of migrants. The key question under consideration is the state's obligation to admit migrants. This question is reflected on the basis of selected theories of global justice. The thesis also includes a description and role of social work with migrants. The first part of the thesis focuses on the introduction to the issue of migration, presenting the basic concepts related to the phenomenon of migration and dealing with different forms and types of migration and basic theories of migration; the following subchapter is a reflection of the migration crisis itself. The second part of the thesis consists in the definition of ethically problematic points related to the admission of migrants, reflecting the issues of human rights and state sovereignty and presenting the migration policy. The third part of the thesis focuses on the definition of the concept of global justice as an ethical basis for the state's approach to migrants. The last part of the thesis deals with social work with migrants, its individual methods and theories, as well as selected organisations working with migrants in the Czech Republic.
Responsibility of Nation States for Global Justice: The Case of Germany
Wrenger, Nora Alma Emilie ; Salamon, Janusz (advisor) ; Halamka, Tomáš (referee)
The thesis philosophically examines what moral responsibility Germany has towards non-nationals outside of its borders, based on the country's commitment to human dignity. International institutions are excluded. The focus of this work lies on the concept of human dignity as the basis for global justice. As the foundation, a political and legal background is provided in the form of a discourse analysis. Using the criteria of Dworkin's method of the "moral reading" of the constitution, the Kantian notion of human dignity is identified as the moral philosophical basis of the German concept of dignity - thereby contributing to definitional clarification of human dignity and the related concepts constituting the foundation of the German hierarchy of values. On this basis, Germany has a moral duty to respect the human dignity of every individual. To examine whether a positive duty can also be established, the philosophical foundations identified - especially Kant's theory of justice - are applied to the global level. Lastly, the concept of negative and positive duties is utilised to explore the limitations of assigning responsibility to nation states in the globalised world. As a result, this thesis establishes, for Germany, a negative duty for non-nationals and a weak positive duty manifested in the...
Global Dimension of Rawls' Theory of Justice
Ottingerová, Lucie ; Šimsa, Martin (advisor) ; Kučera, Jan (referee)
This thesis is concerned with mapping one of the most topical discussions in the field of modern political philosophy, namely the contention about the existence, nature and extent of justice in the era of a highly globalised world. However, the clash about the existence of global justice, hitherto referred to as the clash between cosmopolitans and internationalists, is not viewed in its entirety. More specifically, this thesis aspires to make an introduction into the debate against the background of one of the most influential philosophical works of the 20th century which has significantly contributed to the delimitation of the term "justice"- Theory of Justice by John Rawls. This book incited joyful reaction from a number of cosmopolitan theorists, including most notably Charles Beitz and Thomas Pogge, who perceived it as a clear attempt at extending traditionally liberal ideals and precepts beyond the scope of nation states. The difference principle in particular caught their attention as it represented a suitable way of facilitating the ideal of social justice at global level. Nonetheless, Rawls himself rejected cosmopolitan claims. As this thesis aspires to fully comprehend the reasons that led him to such a step, it will be necessary to introduce Rawls' political philosophy in its entirety,...
Environmental Migration - Reflection of the Migration Policy Segment from the Point of View of Global Justice and Christian Social Ethics
Váňa Jirků, Tereza ; Štica, Petr (advisor) ; Fošum, Jan (referee)
The thesis aims to familiarize readers with the basic concepts of environmental migration at such a pace as to enable discussion and reflection on the subject. The first chapter is introductory and defines basic concepts such as migration, environmental migration, refugee. The second chapter deals with environmental migration. Environmental migration is nothing new. Natural and human-induced disasters have been the cause of migration in the past and are likely to be the cause of migration. The third chapter deals with legislation on environmental migration. It examines refugee law, human rights law, or international humanitarian law. It points out that the existing legislation is not sufficiently developed. So far, there is no legally recognized definition of an environmental migrant. The fourth chapter looks at migration as a moral question, primarily in the optics of the social doctrine of the Church, the universal determination of goods, solidarity, and the direction towards the integral good. The fifth chapter deals with the little discussed or neglected ethical issues associated with migration. The last chapter is devoted to possible suggestions and solutions to environmental migration. It describes the most common proposals such as broadening refugee definition, enhancing disaster protection...
